Prepare for Weather Extremes

Storing your RV in the winter means it will be exposed to harsh winter conditions. If you plan on storing your motorhome over the summer, it will get exposed to extreme heat. Storing for a very long period of time could mean your coach gets to experience all four seasons. No matter when you are storing your RV, take the time to prepare for extreme weather conditions.

For the first step, decide on where you are going to store your RV. Here at Stor4You, we offer many different options and locations for storage. Make sure to check out our website, as finding the right storage option is very important.

Consider how long you will be storing your unit. If your RV will be stored long term, and you aren’t going to check on it, remove the batteries in it. This includes the RV battery, as well as small batteries for items such as clocks, and electronics. This step is important to avoid freezing and draining of the batteries. If you plan on occasionally starting or using the RV, don’t remove the motorhome battery. But make sure it is fully charged before storing as this will prevent it from draining.

Make sure to inflate the RV tires to the recommended max cold pressure. Also, put something between the tires and the ground. This could be as simple as a board or plank of wood. Preserving your tires will allow you to be ready to go when you are done storing your RV. Other final preparations are to close windows and lower blinds to avoid sun damage. As well as removing perishables and anything that can freeze. Often, people think of food items when considering things that can freeze. But don’t forget other liquids such as soaps, that can also freeze and cause damage.

Coach Maintenance

Basic maintenance on your motorhome is also important to do before storing it long term. By completing these steps, you will extend the life of your RV, and create fewer issues for your future self. Before long term storage, make sure to wash the exterior of your motorhome and do a full clean of the interior. You will want to make sure any awning fabric is cleaned while you are washing the RV as well. Before storing the coach away, make sure any awning material is also dry.

You will also want to get an oil change and winterize plumbing and tanks by flushing them out with water. If you are in a cold region climate, you may want to add engine and windshield washer antifreeze. Before adding any fluid to your RV, make sure to check the owner’s manual for the correct practice.

Take time to inspect all exterior areas, make sure they are sealed to avoid water damage. Look at the roof seams, windows, awnings, and other openings. Water damage most often happens during storage, and if you are not there to fix the issue, mold or mildew can occur. During this inspection, cover the air conditioner and vents to avoid insects. Turn off gas appliances and the gas supply valve. You will also want to turn off the main breaker and unplug everything electronic.

Finally, prepare for pests. Remove any consumables that attract mice and other rodents. Place mouse or ant traps around the motorhome, and leave dryer sheets out to keep out rodents. Avoid poisons if possible. Remove or put away items such as toilet paper or paper towels that could be used for rodent nesting. Defrost the freezer, clean out the refrigerator, and leave the doors open.
